The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has revealed plans to prohibit unpainted taxis and buses from operating on the roads of the nation’s capital. Wike, discussing this during a media chat in Abuja, clarified that this initiative aims to tackle the issue of ‘one chance’ incidents in the city.To address the menace of ‘one chance,’ which has already been partially curtailed, Wike emphasized the need for more stringent measures in the FCT. He outlined that only vehicles painted with the FCT color and registered by the FCT Administration (FCTA) would be permitted to engage in commercial activities in the territory.By implementing this, passengers would have the assurance that the driver is certified by the FCT, and both the buses and taxis have received approval from the FCT. Wike highlighted the importance of regulating Uber operators, stating that they too must register to operate in Abuja. This registration would enable the government to identify and certify the drivers while ensuring their profiles are vetted by security agencies.In emphasizing the necessity of rules for the city, Wike expressed concern about the absence of an official terminal where residents can board buses to specific destinations. He revealed plans for the 2024 fiscal year to construct three terminals initially, providing a centralized point for approved buses and taxis to pick up passengers.
