FCT Minister Highlights Priorities During Meeting with British High Commissioner

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, recently underscored the administration’s focus on security, agriculture, and job creation during a meeting with a delegation from the British High Commission led by Dr. Richard Montgomery. The meeting took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the FCT Administration.

Dr. Montgomery sought to gain insight into the priorities of the FCT Administration to enhance bilateral relations. In response, Barr. Wike emphasized the importance of job creation, particularly in the agricultural sector, to provide livelihoods for the youth. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in addressing security challenges in the FCT.

The ongoing infrastructure development projects in the Abuja city center and Area Councils were also highlighted as avenues for job creation. Barrister Wike emphasized that the creation of employment opportunities, especially for youths, remains a top priority for the administration.

Regarding agriculture, the FCT Minister expressed the readiness of the administration to collaborate with investors to harness the vast arable lands in the FCT. He emphasized the need to engage youths in agriculture to promote food security and reduce unemployment.

Furthermore, Barr. Wike stated that the FCT is open to investments and collaborations in the tourism sector to boost its attractiveness as a tourist destination.

Addressing security challenges, the Minister acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in improving the security situation in the FCT. He attributed the previous insecurity to the activities of kidnappers and bandits from neighboring states but expressed confidence in the measures taken to address these issues.

Dr. Montgomery, in turn, affirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting agriculture and job creation initiatives in Nigeria. He highlighted ongoing programs aimed at improving agricultural value chains to facilitate trade and economic growth.

The meeting concluded with mutual appreciation for the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the British government, with a focus on strengthening collaboration for the development of the FCT.

Overall, the discussions underscored the importance of addressing security concerns, promoting agricultural development, and creating employment opportunities to foster sustainable growth and prosperity in the FCT.
