Yesterday, a tense exchange of gunfire unfolded as police rescued Segun Akinyemi, an Abuja resident abducted while leaving his home. The kidnappers, en route from Abuja to Kano, were intercepted by Kaduna police, leading to a shootout. According to ASP Mansir Hassan, the Kaduna Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, the operation commenced following a distress call on January 18, 2024. Operatives from Kawo Divisional Headquarters blocked the kidnappers’ vehicle, resulting in a gunfight. Akinyemi was rescued, and one kidnapper, 28-year-old Chinaza Philip of Life Camp Abuja, was arrested. Three others escaped, but efforts to apprehend them are ongoing. The recovered items include the victim’s vehicle, two Retay G17 model pistols, one Beretta pistol, ten 9mm P.A.K ammunitions, and five 9mm special ammunition. Preliminary findings indicate Akinyemi was kidnapped on January 17, 2024. The Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Police Command, A D Ali, praised the operatives and urged continued efforts against criminal elements. He encouraged the public to use security hotlines for prompt responses to distress calls.
